" The Cream the poor! " some news headline to describe the Irish training. It is true that Taste showed some similarities with the formation of Clapton / Bruce / Baker form part of the trio, with music as the main base Blues with some jazzy forays as was customary among most groups of the era. In addition the group had done the first part of Cream on their farewell concert, which adds to the comparison. But where
Cream seemed to hold the essence of his music which consisted of three members, Taste was the work of a single musician Rory Gallagher.
Aged 18 at the group's formation in 1966, it will be the only permanent member (bassist Eric Kitteringham and drummer Norman Damery leaving the group in 1968) and the sole songwriter, signing all the titles of two Single Op Group Taste (1969) and On The Boards (1970).
This latest effort is interesting for several reasons because it shows that facets Gallagher finally let fall or refuse to renew in his solo albums. Including an obvious love for jazz and big blowers like John Coltrane which we can not help but think when listening to what Rory barely 22 years old come to take a saxophone in a few months of practice. While technically this is approximate Still, his interventions on sax on "It's Happened Before , It'll Happen Again" and "On The Boards " create a climate that is not only unpleasant for the music lover. Thereafter we hear very little Rory playing the saxophone on his solo albums with the exception of a few tracks ("Million Miles Away" & "They Do not Make Them Like You Anymore" from the album Tattoo of 1973) but more to create a background for showing off his virtuosity.
Conversely it should be noted that some securities carry with them the characteristics of future compositions of Rory Gallagher Band. "What's Going On " opens the way to Blues Rock that will create muscular over the album and will play on stage. "Eat My Words" meanwhile suggests future monument immortalizing the talents of Rory slide guitar. and "See Here" is the title acoustic Gallagher bind itself to include in almost all his albums and he will perform on stage.
Despite enthusiasm increasingly intense reaches its climax when he visited the Festival of the Isle of Wight in August 1970, Taste splits against all odds but logically. Training serving only satisfy the ambitions of Rory. Taste was one step in his career and "On The Boards" its transition phase.
