The 2000s have given the worst and the best ... unfortunately the music does not escape the influence of major labels who have the flair to exploit a vein ad nauseam. The Rock is also not spared and suffers from phenomenon and the standardization ... The most relevant example is the wave of British rock, started by bands like The Libertines or The Arctic Monkeys recycling again and again the same riffs and reheated false provocative poses.
England was once the breeding ground of the Rock now appears stalled. If the well has dried up, however there is a glimmer of hope across the Atlantic in the person of a man from Detroit.
Jack White (John Anthony Gillis whose real name) as The White Stripes in 1997 with Meg White (he present sometimes as sister or as his ex-wife).
From their eponymous debut album released in 1999, training was influenced rock of its time, including the integration as a good group of Detroit's influence as a group Stooges or MC5 .
But that's not counting on the talent, intelligence and immense musical culture of a Jack White, who worships at the roots of American music. Whether the Delta Blues (Blues or Country) with Robert Johnson, Son House , Blind Willie Mc Tell ... Folk a Bob Dylan or Country by Dolly Parton ... they are just as many elements that enrich the music wanted by White. The rudimentary and imperfect music is also an essential component of his work. Play a tune guitar does not seem a problem for White, who much prefer to hear wrong notes with a guitar with two bullets on an old disk that armada of Blues stratocaster on an album to prod 'sanitized.
Visually the band edge with too much competition, where everything is perfecto, holed jeans and greasy hair ... the Stripes themselves have created their own universe. A universe where the dominant colors are red, white and black giving all this Gothic flavor - child may suggest that the duo straight out of a Tim Burton movie.
All these elements combined with a strong desire to do battle with the scene made the reputation of the group that first creates the sensation in his own country before exploding worldwide with the album Elephant (2003 ) and heady riff Seven Nation Army who before becoming the anthem of the stages was waved as a banner ... Rock is back. The phenomenon
The White Stripes taking dramatically, Jack White has the intelligence to take this new notoriety calmly step back and humble. What
admittedly disconcerting news that Rock sees him as the new Kurt Cobain.
The musical direction he is taking the group through the successor Elephant: Get Behind Me Satan ... the guitar back in favor of keyboards and percussion rout critics and fans alike but establishes the reputation of Jack as an artist to the total musical freedom. A reputation that allows our man to be knighted and cross swords with renowned artists such as Jimmy Page, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones ... Unfortunately
the artistic development of White does not necessarily go hand in hand with that of his sidekick, which multiplies the depressions and anxiety attacks, denying passage to the sixth album Icky Thump be interpreted widely on a grand tour.
It seizes the opportunity to let Jack White The White Stripes aside and base with guitarist Brendan Benson , bassist Jack Lawrence and drummer Patrick Keeler the side project The Raconteurs . Music performed by the group is quite similar in terms of influence with what White did with his previous group, except he has (finally! critics say Meg White), a rhythm section much more elaborate. This collaboration was born two albums: Broken Boy Soldier (2006) and Consolers of the Lonely (2008) .
In 2009, Jack White is working to a new project with Alison Mosshart (Singer of The Kills), Dean Fertita (Queen of the Stone Age), Jack Lawrence (bassist for The Raconteurs ). Together they form The Dead Weather group anchored more garage rock and the compositions where the contribution from Jack White is no longer limited officiating in the group that as a drummer. The band released the album Horehound and is already planning to now to follow their collaboration in 2010 with the release of a second album.
Very productive and true mutli instrumentalist Jack White was largely a place in the pantheon of rock icons, while the golden age of the latter is behind us. The decade that begins a new chapter in its history and these are people who write like White.
